What were you doing to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace? Did you miss it? Don’t feel bad. It was September 21, and is actually an annual day declared by the UN as “devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.” This year’s theme was “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace” whereby the goal is to “end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all” by the year 2030.
How do we get there? 108 sun salutations, naturally. This Saturday, in honor of the UN’s International Day of Peace, known shakti-shaker Shiva Rea will be leading a “moving meditation” from the National Mall in Washington DC on Saturday, September 25. The event is part of The Global Mala Project‘s mission “to bring the global yoga community together from every continent, school and approach to form a ‘mala around the earth'” through the globally collective practice of 108 sun salutations.
The main event will be webcast live online from 11:30am-1pm EST. You have to register at yogadownload.com to watch and/or play along at home. If you want to GO, the day starts at 10am and kicks off with an acro yoga demo because it wouldn’t be a massive yoga event without one these days.
Maybe you won’t end poverty, but it might be a nice day to feel the local community love, or at least shake off some of the election cooties in the heart of politics land. Shiva Rea is quite the energetic mover. (Also, depending on who’s the next president, you might want to take advantage of the yoga now.)
