Actress Kate Hudson (aka Penny Lane 4eva) is meditation’s latest celebrity advocate. “Meditation has saved my sanity,” Hudson writes in her new book, Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body. “…In this world of hyperspeed, overstimulation, no escape from technology, and constant emotional stress, it’s very hard to stay centered and grounded,” she adds, via an excerpt in People.
Hudson, who already has her own yoga clothing line, shares that since starting a meditation practice she feels “so much more at ease” and better able to re-center herself “when life feels out of control.”
“During one particularly difficult time in my life when I was feeling overwhelmed, it was meditation that brought me back to me,” she writes. “At the time, a tough decision left me feeling completely upended. I could not stop my mind from racing. I could barely sleep. And I felt trapped by my anxiety.”
And guess who she has to thank? Her mom! Goldie Hawn has been an advocate for meditation for years through The Hawn Foundation her organization focusing on bringing mindfulness practices to children. She’s also an author of several books including A Lotus Grows in the Mud and 10 Mindful Minutes which put her on the New York Times best-selling list.
“My mom told me to just start simply, by calming down and bringing awareness to my breaths,” Hudson says. “She told me to follow my breaths in and out, remembering that the thoughts would come, but to just watch them pass, and to always come back to a simple breath.”
Her first reaction might sound familiar.
“At first, I felt even more uncomfortable in my body and mind when I tried this. I felt like squirming away, like a toddler in time-out. But I kept at it, trusting my mom when she said it would get easier and that you got more comfortable.”
Ah, the old monkey toddler mind. Or is that puppy-monkey-baby brain? (Sorry!)

Whatever gets peoples attention to anything slightly spiritual is alright with me.
Everybody needs an entry into a deeper love. If it comes from Kate Hudson, so be it.
Absolutely agree. Just pointing out what I believe is a double standard.
I wonder how much her “revelation” has to do with the start of the clothing line?? 🙂
