Johnny Mathis is not just the guy you hear on late night infomercials for music anthologies of yesteryear, though he IS releasing a new box set of songs. Sure, your parents, or maybe even grandparents (what year is this?) will talk of him fondly, but truly this guy is a classic American singer, well-known for his smooth voice and romantic ballads. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, listen here, and be transported to another land and time. (He also sings some of the best Christmas music out there if you’re into that sort of thing.)
Though his biggest hits might have come decades ago, the 78-year-old singer is still active, so active he’s even taken up yoga, when he’s not doing tours or lending his voice as a blowtorch wielding golfer on “The Simpsons.” It’s never too late, folks.
He recently spoke about trying this “yoga stuff” he’s been hearing a lot about:
AP: How was life been outside of music?
Mathis: I’m trying to figure out how much exercise I need … Someone said, “Have you ever tried to do some yoga stuff?” … I’m torn between starting a whole new routine of exercises or sticking with the ones I have. That’s the thing that happens I think with performers who get a little older and wonder how they can keep their appearance up.
AP: How’s the yoga going?
Mathis: This is my third day. I need a little bit more time. I’ve seen it and I know people who do it and I thought: “Let’s try it. Let’s see.” Because it’s very good for breathing, I know that and that’s a very big, big part of what I do onstage. … I get up at 4:30 in the morning to go to my gym classes and I have been doing that for a very long time … but the yoga thing is about a week old and we’ll see how long that lasts.
Chances are, if you stick with it, Johnny, surely you will find it to be wonderful, wonderful.
