Solstice Yoga 2013

It’s baaaaack. Yoga in Times Square for Summer Solstice 2014…so close, yet so far away. We’re barely into spring, but get your hopes up folks, summertime is just around the corner and you can now sign up for sweaty salutations in America’s busiest intersection for free on June 21st. Full schedule below. (See photos from last year.)

If you’re hemming and hawing over whether or not to attend you might want to decide sooner rather than later. This year there’s construction in Times Square (NYC will be so great when it’s finished!) so they’re saying not as many people will be able to attend as usual. Head over to the official page to register and maybe consider donating to their charitable partners, the worthy Bent on Learning and Urban Zen.

If you don’t make it Times Square on the 21st, there’s a spill-over solstice event on Sunday the 22nd called the MindBody Sol Conference, held by, you guessed it, MindBody. The all-day event features master classes from teachers like Alan Finger and The Yees and is not free ($20/class) but it’s a nice idea. Click here for more info and to register.

They’d had some really, really big well-known “names” in yoga last year. Not so, this year. More regional yogalebrities … or maybe just the new up-and-coming guard. At least the class names are more descriptive. Of course, they’re starting early to announce.

It takes place on a Saturday, after all … a Saturday in wedding/dad/grad/tourist season … that may be the reason. [Did I just make something rhyme?]

I’d been there last year while waiting around for over an hour to be let in … I had gotten all the swag available (available to my nosebleed section, anyhow; which had been about 3-4 blocks down from the main stage area)-had no idea where the instruction was coming from-and neither had almost anybody else around me; until well into it. Would have had to have craned my neck like in The Exorcist in order to follow anything closed-circuit-Jumbotron-wise, Have to hand it to Eventbrite, the crown control had been executed with Germanic precision, by and large. … My swag included a little yoga DVD from Yoga Journal. The very, very skinny rubber mat was useful for a pilates class I took once, later.

A spider had crawled across my mat as I’d practiced … in that class of 4,000 people. [Like Big Lulu loves to say, “Do one thing each day that scares you …”]

This convinced me to try to return to yoga in the park this summer. I’d always avoided THAT, except for going ONCE … only ONCE before this Happening …

First and last time for Summer Solstice Celebration had been last year, may as well keep up the streak … of not returning, that is.

Carmen, are you thinking you’ll miss THAT?
