Yoga Studio Opens In Chicago’s O’Hare Airport

in YD News

Attention air travelers, your new favorite yoga studio is now in Chicago O’Hare International Airport! That’s right, Chicago is the next city to step up their customer service and open up a yoga space, following San Francisco, Dallas and Burlington, VT. As many frequent flyers know, Chicago is a major midwest hub for connecting flights so there should be plenty of practitioners passing through – approximately 67 million a year. But don’t worry, they’ll have mats AND disinfectant wipes, though you might want to bring your own.

The new studio, which opened Tuesday on the second floor of the Terminal 3 rotunda, features a bamboo floor, a mirror on one wall and a tinted window on the other so you don’t have to worry about putting on a show, but there’s still natural light. Also, there’s a TV on the wall playing serene scenes with the soundtrack of calming music, which could be really peaceful or rather disturbing. It’s not a huge space but it’s cool they’ve carved out any space at all.

What’s even cooler is the whole airport is getting healthier and greener. Right next to the studio is an “urban garden” where vegetables are grown and then used in airport restaurants and sold at the airport’s fresh market. Fresh what? Tell us you’re adding an artisanal juice shop and all of Brooklyn might set up a commune right there in O’Hare.

“We’ve essentially created an urban oasis at the airport,” said Rosemarie Andolino, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation. We’ll keep that in mind when booking our next layover.

  • That’s so cool. And so surprising. Are we at a cultural tipping point? If so, the future is bright.

I was just here yesterday! I walked in and two other people were there, stretching during their layover. It made me happy to see it being used. They even have an athletic wipe dispenser to clean off your matt afterwards, and a cute little coatrack. I took a few pictures with a wide angle so : http://flic.kr/p/ih8iqm & http://flic.kr/p/ih8BLr . This is way better than the one in Dallas, and it’s right up by the garden, my favorite place to sleep and scarf down cheese plates during long layovers.
