My Morning Jacket May Change the Face of Destination Rock Yoga Music Festivals

If you’re the kind of music fan who still needs sex and drugs with your rock ‘n’ roll, My Morning Jacket’s new resort-centered yoga-fied rock festival may not be for you. Their new One Big Holiday 5-day event, billed as “an all-inclusive musical adventure” will be held January 26-30, 2014 at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya resort in Mexico. Toto, we’re not in the dirt lands of Bonnaroo, anymore!

Under “activities” on the official event website they boast that, “as if 4 nights in paradise with MMJ was not enough” you can partake in fun activities like outdoor yoga classes, snorkeling and tequila-tasting. Basically a more well-groomed Wanderlust Festival with more rock ‘n’ roll and less feathers.

Is this the new face of the notoriously unabashed dirty and grimy port-o-potty’d music festival? Maybe! It doesn’t come without a hefty price tag though: tickets range from $1,249 to $2,599 including hotel accommodations for four nights, which, come to think of it, is rather comparable to some yoga retreats.

We really think the Jackets are missing a major element here. There’s been yoga at other music fests like Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. But why just have a few yoga classes when you could have a whole yoga retreat included? Or, better yet, a yoga teacher training! Because if there’s one thing we know about destination yoga, it’s that it could use a bit more rock. Did we just come up with the best/worst idea for the most magical Yoga Rockin’ Musical Retreat Fest ever?* We’ll call it My Morning Asana! We’re pretty sure the yoga-digging Jim James will love it.

Besides MMJ’s 3-full sets, other artists already signed on to play at One Big Holiday include the Flaming Lips, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mariachi El Bronx, and Rob Garza (of Thievery Corporation). Party!

*We’re half kidding. This will likely happen, and soon.
