Power Posing: How Yoga Helps You Fake It Til You Become It

in Free Online Yoga Class, Science, Thanks for the tip

Just about everyone’s heard the saying “fake it til you make it.” But can you fake feeling powerful and confident? Social psychologist Amy Cuddy says yes you can, and in her TED Talk, she explains how “power posing,” as in standing strong in your body and taking up space, even when you feel weak and small, can affect how we think and feel about ourselves. It can even affect our brain chemistry, raising testosterone levels and lowering cortisol (the stress hormone) which can impact our overall chances for success, and likely, happiness.

Conducting “power pose” experiments Cuddy found:

Our bodies change our minds.
Minds can change our behavior.
Behavior can change our outcomes.

In short, you “fake it” until you become it.

So standing in front of your mirror posing like Wonder Woman in your underoos is paying off! And all of those warrior poses? They may very well be helping you battle your fears off the mat. Try striking a fierce virabhadrasana II the next time you’re about to go in for a job interview or speak in front of a crowd or make a big scary decision and see how you feel.

Take a few minutes to check out this inspiring talk. Then go out there, take your boldest power pose and fake it til you become it.

  • Ha! I was just telling someone about this the other week. My coworkers have mentioned that since I did my teacher training I am a lot more confident at work and all I could think about was that TED Talk where the woman talked about how moving your body/taking up more space increased your confidence–and how true it really is.

I was wondering how you chose a teacher training program to do? There are so many to choose from these days.

The teachings of Guru Rattana are totally inspirational. She has completely transformed my life for the better – I am healthier, both mentally and physically, as well as more spiritually in tune. Though she offers DVDs and other learning materials, there are free lessons online if you go to the yoga online superstore Yoga Technology.

  • Wow

What I heard, loud and clear, is that being in a position of power actually lowers your stress hormones. I never would have guessed and have turned down promotions out of concern about increased stress during times when outside stressors were already high. I’m taking charge!!!

  • My Professor showed us this TED talk, I love it! So true! I love that such a simple thing as adjusting our posture can have a huge shift in our state of mind. Proof of the interrelatedness of body-mind-spirit!

This talk focused on how small two-minute power poses lead to significant differences in your mind and body (higher testosterone and lower cortisol). TWO MINUTES! And how many power poses are there in a 1.5 hour Ashtanga class? No wonder that Yoga has such a positive affect on your mind and body! Running to the mat right now…
