Soooo did you know B.K.S. Iyengar had a new book? Did you know it will be his last major book ever? To complete the canon of invaluable yoga texts such as Light on Yoga, Light on Life, Light On Pranayama, and The Tree of Yoga that helped us modern folk understand the ancient teachings, we are treated to Mr. Iyengar’s wisdom on yoga philosophy and his interpretation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Core of the Yoga Sutras presents each sutra in Sanskrit, transliteration and English translation followed by B.K.S. Iyengar’s commentary.
Iyengar, who turned 94 this past December, calls this book his “last major work in this lifetime.” Let’s just say all the lights are on and Guruji is home to school us.
We are truly delighted to be giving away TWO copies of Core of the Yoga Sutras: The Definitive Guide to the Philosophy of Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar’s final book, courtesy of Harper Collins, which was just released today (Jan. 29). Woop!
TO ENTER: The official description states that the B. K. S. Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS) is a not-for-profit organization that “disseminates and promotes the art, science and philosophy of yoga according to the teachings of B. K. S. Iyengar.” We think we could all add our own personal flavor to that. So we ask you – for you – is yoga an art? A science? A philosophy? A _____? Your turn!
Giveaway open until 11:59pm Sunday, February 3, 2013. Two winners will be chosen at random and announced soon after. Good luck!

Yoga is…
An offering.
An offering to yourself, to others, and to the divine. Very simple 🙂
Yoga is art, science, philosophy, self-expression, catharsis, and sheer beauty all rolled into one. I simply can’t assign it one category…that is far too difficult!
Yoga is art, science, philosophy, self-expression, catharsis, and sheer beauty all rolled into one. I simply can’t assign it one category…that is far too difficult!
how do i enter the competition???? cant find a link anywhere..
to me, yoga is … a homecoming, a peace emanator…. xxx
Yoga is a way of life and a path to the divine
a beautiful path
Yoga is a life line…
Yoga is union…integration…a tool for transformation…a method to make ourselves instruments of the Divine.
Yoga is a journey. Just as life is a journey. It is full of ups, downs, frustrations, goals, successes, beauty, and finding strength in endurance and pain or surrendering to weakness and acceptance of where we are at this very moment. It is different to everyone and all experience it differently.
Yoga is the unification of the physical and individual with the universal. It’s a strong discipline by which to guide and elevate one’s life.
Yoga is an invitation to make space.
This can be artful…
It could be scientific.
Hell, I will take a little bit of both!
(Or a lot!)
Yoga is an invitation to make space.
Yoga is the yolk/union of all things, bringing all things to wholeness: including art, science, philosophy, religion.
Yoga is greater than the sum of its parts, just as the Universe is
stardust and toenails all at once. Yoga is breath in our body and wind through the sky.
Prana moves through it all, moves through us all. We are all united with all that surrounds us.
Yoga is seeing that there is no seperate-ness.
yoga is an art, an lifestyle, an expression. It is everything.
Yoga is allowing yourself to be in the present. Yoga is not a thing. Yoga is not anything. Yoga is a process. Yoga is no process that you can work on, nothing you can achieve or be or do. Yoga is (as the movie says) and Yoga is not.
Yoga is the greatest….using your words, it is an art and a philosophy and a science all wrapped into one. It is a science, but there is no right answer. It is an art, yet there is a specific method, one that can be tested. It is a philosophy because it informs our life every step of the way. We think Yoga is an art because it is so beautiful. But it is not about the artwork, nor the artist. It is like art without a doer or a done, only a doing. It is zen with a whole bunch of asana thrown in. And if any of my words has pointed to it, it is only because words are so far away from what yoga truly is, which is a visceral experience in the body-mind-heart that is unique and individual to each of us.
Yoga is a practice for creating stillness in the mind, so that we can see a clear reflection of reality.
Yoga is LIFE.
Yoga is
A way of life,
Nada, maya, zero. Nothing to see here folks, move on along…
Yoga is the perfect synthesis of all three: art, philosophy and science.
Yoga is a choice.
Yoga is an art, a science, a philosophy, a love, a medicine, a tree, a blossom, a poem, an om……
Yoga is personal and transformative. Yoga is a path you follow for life that leads you inwards, leads you home.
x
Yoga is what I need!
Yoga is breathing.
Iyengar said it himself… Yoga is like music, which can be whatever you’d like to make of it.
Yoga is an Attitude.
Yoga is the force! Sometimes the yoga is strong with me, sometimes not. It’s always there, though.
Why does it only have to be one thing? There is a beauty in the movements which evokes art and there is a science in the way it shows you how to manipulate your body to improve your well-being. Finally, it is also a philosophy, teaching us how to slow down, look inside and accept. Yoga is all and evokes all.
Yoga is a way to BE.
spiritual practice – ideally, a disciplined one
Yoga is a gift.
Yoga is all of that. But it is truly a way to connect yourself with the universe by means of a truly tested method b
Yoga is awareness…
Yoga = yoga
BTW: I don’t want the book , already got everything 🙂
Yoga is an art, a science, a philosophy, a way of living.
Yoga is a mystery….
Yoga is … life. Pure and simple. It´s like that good friend who is always right next to me, even in my darkest moments when I neglect it and don´t even realize that I need it. And then when I do it´s there, not judging me, just welcoming me with opens arms and a big heart.

Yoga is an escape. And the more I realize that it’s something I should run towards, not away from, the better I become.
To steal a line from Thomas Dolby’s song “She Blinded me with Science” , yoga is “poetry in motion”

“Yoga its the practice of tolerating the consequences of being yourself.”-Bhagavad Gita, that’s the best definition for me
Yoga is one of my favorite things!
Yoga is a release and a reveal!
Yoga is the strongest stress buster I’ve ever found.
Yoga is a path.

Yoga is a holistic means of uniting mind and body in this moment. To me, it’s a great learning process where I meet my frustration, impatience, and accomplishment all at the same time.
Yoga is a way of life. Yoga is a path to self-awareness. Perhaps if one is in the moment and self-aware then anything could be yoga.
Yoga is love
Yoga is my saving grace.
Yoga is… a source of joy!
Yoga is everything!
Yoga is the path to your Inner Self; the road less traveled.
Yoga is presence in breath, life, and self-acceptance.
Yoga is a practical, systematic means of surrendering to What Is, in the process revealing What You Are.
Yoga is one of my essentials.
yoga is a lovesport
Yoga is a space where you learn to love your body and mind where they are, in the moment. It’s where you learn to let go and accept the now.
yoga is a journey of self discovery
… a choice to connect with whatever you choose…
Yoga is the life line to my sanity and well being.
Yoga is a compass.
Yoga is the infinite flow of energy which is ♥EVERYTHING ♥!!!
Yoga is everything or nothing or something depending how you let it touch you and enter your life. If you let it, it will change you in ways you couldn’t even imagine. It is a science, a philosophy, an art and a practice.
Yoga is inspiration
yoga is accepting of the form you give it
Yoga is a doorway to your true Self.
Yoga is a mirror. It can reflect, illuminate and ignite!
Yoga is strength and serenity.
Yoga is a light. It illuminates my way to the Self, it shows me the path & it shows me that I have always been who I am, I am just continuing to come back to myself every day. It shines from within me & everyone I meet.
Yoga is practise
The (non-profit) yoga studio I practice at says that yoga is is about empowering diverse communities towards lives of joy, peace, and purpose. I will donate the book to them (after I read it…) if I win!
yoga is a bridge – a bridge between science and religion. body and breath. brain and spirit. self-awareness and collective unity.
Yoga is a way of life.
Yoga is sublimation.
Yoga is the breath.
Yoga is all of the above. Yoga is a way of being.
Yoga is everything.
Yoga is a research experiment…for me in that way it is more science than art…we are taking these postures, using this breathing, and studying the way of thinking all to see what the outcome may be. For me it’s been good so far…I think I’ll continue the experiment!
Yoga is!
Yoga is the calm amid the chaos.
Yoga is healing. And a way of being.
Yoga is the breath of life… Healer of all wounds and a way of life that makes all things one.
Yoga is a practice!

It begins and ends with a namaste, as you open your heart to love.
🙂
Yoga is like a diamond in the rough. You gotta keep at it to get to the good stuff. Bling bling on a different realm!
Anything that involves self-love, which ultimately translates to the love of everything and everyone, nature and beyond.
Unconditional love, that is
To me, yoga is a lifestyle choice. To be a true yogi, you don’t just do it in a studio and yoga is not a mat-focused activity. You incorporate yoga in the way you walk and hold your spine upright, the way you breathe and take full cleansing exhales, the way you focus your energies on a daily or weekly mantra, and how you pay special attention to your chakras and give different energy epicentres love when they need it. To me that is yoga. All day, every day. #yogalove
Yoga is a lifestyle of Peace, balance and respect.
yoga is my body, heart and souls nourishment.
Yoga is an art, a science, a way of life, all of these things and then some. Yoga is a microcosm of the known and unknown universe unfolding in our bodies, hearts and minds.
Yoga is transportation to myself.
Yoga is what you make it…
a way of living.
In simple language “Yoga is a way of life……every breath’
Yoga is Self empowerment
Yoga is…life. It was explained to me “that your first response to life was to breathe, so to take in and fill yourself up IS to take in life.” It’s more than a lifeSTYLE to me, it is accepting a new life and then taking root to develop in every which way.
PURE 🙂
To me yoga is a heartbeat, constantly expanding and contracting our lives, our bodies, our breath. It grows stronger, steadier, and more calm the more it is used.
In yoga, we use our practice as a time to do just that, practice using our breathe and the asanas to be in the moment with ourselves, to get to practice knowing and loving our true selves, from which we can be compassionate to others. This brain-body practice is supported by science, and also an art and philosophy for how to live our lives.
namaste. peace.
…my spiritual practice.
Namaste

Yoga is a journey home.
Balance
Yoga is clarity.
Yoga is a path to awakening.
yoga is a song in my heart…..shhhh, if you listen carefully, you can hear it.
Yoga is the road to self discovery. My body is the vehicle, my soul is the vessel, my life is the journey.
Yoga is like an inkblot. When asked what it is, the first person says, “It’s a horse.” The second person says, “No, you’re wrong. It’s a dog.” Then a third person says, “You’re all wrong, it’s a cat.” And so it went on without consensus. Finally the first person says, “You know, know that I look at it I think it’s a…..” And so it went on.
Yoga is like a river that slowly over time re-sculpts the landscape one grain of sand at a time, until one day, there is a Grand Canyon where once there was flat land.
Yoga is like taking a bus that has many stops. At the first stop a person gets off because he/she doesn’t want to go to the end of the bus stop. At the second stop, another person gets off. And so it goes until the last person gets off. Each person got off the bus based on their needs. Each person took the same bus but wound up at a different destination.
YOGA IS.
A divine, vibrant, tangible rite to life
a path of personal transformation
Yoga is the divine flow of love.
Yoga is a way of life.
a way of LIFE.
Slap in the face. There’s no hiding once you’ve taken a yoga class that hits you in your heart. No matter how much you’ve resisted your inner voice over the years and let your ego voice guide you, yoga takes all of that and throws it in your face, proving that your true essence is not just hanging out at your convenience, but rather waiting on the outskirts, begging to be beckoned. Yoga tells you who is running the show- not your voice, your opinion or judgement, but rather your shortest links, your weakest voices, your harshest judgements etc. Yoga unveils the real you- good bad ugly and inflexible. Yoga is a slap back to true essence.

Yoga is skill in action
The gradual elevation from that which maintains all fear, suffering and attachment to the physical, egotistical world into the realm of the pure Universal Spirit. The transformation of stormy waters to the calm reality and pure vision of what IS.
life
Yoga is a journey that has no end or specific destiny. The experience (or practice) will go wherever you take it. Yoga, just like life and relationships, is a reflection of your efforts… you get back what you put into it. ~om shanti om
Art and Science often blur together. Yoga is both. Yes there is a boat load of philosophy that gets thrown into the mix but ultimately who’s philosophy to buy into or not buying into any of the philosophy is up to the individual . You cannot remove the biology and kinesthesiology from yoga. The art of yoga is in the eye or mind of the practitioner should they choose to view it.
…a way of life
Yoga, for me, is a blend of art, science and a philosophy that nutures and enhances my quality of life everyday!
A best friend!!
Since the breath is yoga and we must breathe to live, I believe yoga is a way of being in the world, of seeing and observing without judgment our lives, of starting where one is at any given moment and acting from a strong center so that we are acting not reacting. Yoga is a means by which one can be open and strong in our dealings with ourselves and with others.
Yoga is everything. 🙂
yoga is a bunch of new-agey hippy speak to try to win a contest. yoga is about moksha. get over it.
also iyengar already published a translation and commentary on the yoga sutras. how is this different?
A Marketing Machine
Yoga is a religion!
when I read the Gnostic Gospels I was surprised that Jesus was teaching yoga in them.
