YogaDork Giveaway: BKS Iyengar’s ‘Core of the Yoga Sutras: The Definitive Guide to the Philosophy of Yoga’

in Giveaways!, Yoga Books

Soooo did you know B.K.S. Iyengar had a new book? Did you know it will be his last major book ever? To complete the canon of invaluable yoga texts such as Light on Yoga, Light on Life, Light On Pranayama, and The Tree of Yoga that helped us modern folk understand the ancient teachings, we are treated to Mr. Iyengar’s wisdom on yoga philosophy and his interpretation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Core of the Yoga Sutras presents each sutra in Sanskrit, transliteration and English translation followed by B.K.S. Iyengar’s commentary.

Iyengar, who turned 94 this past December, calls this book his “last major work in this lifetime.” Let’s just say all the lights are on and Guruji is home to school us.

We are truly delighted to be giving away TWO copies of Core of the Yoga Sutras: The Definitive Guide to the Philosophy of Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar’s final book, courtesy of Harper Collins, which was just released today (Jan. 29). Woop!

TO ENTER: The official description states that the B. K. S. Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS) is a not-for-profit organization that “disseminates and promotes the art, science and philosophy of yoga according to the teachings of B. K. S. Iyengar.” We think we could all add our own personal flavor to that. So we ask you – for you – is yoga an art? A science? A philosophy? A _____?  Your turn!

Giveaway open until 11:59pm Sunday, February 3, 2013. Two winners will be chosen at random and announced soon after. Good luck!

  • Yoga is…

    An offering.

An offering to yourself, to others, and to the divine. Very simple 🙂

  • Amy

Yoga is art, science, philosophy, self-expression, catharsis, and sheer beauty all rolled into one. I simply can’t assign it one category…that is far too difficult!

Yoga is a way of life and a path to the divine

  • Heidi

    a beautiful path

  • Ann

    Yoga is a life line…

  • Mark-Francis Mullen

Yoga is union…integration…a tool for transformation…a method to make ourselves instruments of the Divine.

  • Yoga is a journey. Just as life is a journey. It is full of ups, downs, frustrations, goals, successes, beauty, and finding strength in endurance and pain or surrendering to weakness and acceptance of where we are at this very moment. It is different to everyone and all experience it differently.

  • Yoga is the unification of the physical and individual with the universal. It’s a strong discipline by which to guide and elevate one’s life.

  • Yoga is an invitation to make space.
    This can be artful…
    It could be scientific.
Hell, I will take a little bit of both!
    (Or a lot!)

Yoga is an invitation to make space.

  • Yoga is the yolk/union of all things, bringing all things to wholeness: including art, science, philosophy, religion.
Yoga is greater than the sum of its parts, just as the Universe is
stardust and toenails all at once. Yoga is breath in our body and wind through the sky.
Prana moves through it all, moves through us all. We are all united with all that surrounds us.
Yoga is seeing that there is no seperate-ness.

  • Candice

yoga is an art, an lifestyle, an expression. It is everything.

  • Yoga is allowing yourself to be in the present. Yoga is not a thing. Yoga is not anything. Yoga is a process. Yoga is no process that you can work on, nothing you can achieve or be or do. Yoga is (as the movie says) and Yoga is not.

Yoga is the greatest….using your words, it is an art and a philosophy and a science all wrapped into one. It is a science, but there is no right answer. It is an art, yet there is a specific method, one that can be tested. It is a philosophy because it informs our life every step of the way. We think Yoga is an art because it is so beautiful. But it is not about the artwork, nor the artist. It is like art without a doer or a done, only a doing. It is zen with a whole bunch of asana thrown in. And if any of my words has pointed to it, it is only because words are so far away from what yoga truly is, which is a visceral experience in the body-mind-heart that is unique and individual to each of us.

  • Jody

Yoga is an art, a science, a philosophy, a love, a medicine, a tree, a blossom, a poem, an om……

  • Yoga is personal and transformative. Yoga is a path you follow for life that leads you inwards, leads you home.

Yoga is the force! Sometimes the yoga is strong with me, sometimes not. It’s always there, though.

  • Megan

Why does it only have to be one thing? There is a beauty in the movements which evokes art and there is a science in the way it shows you how to manipulate your body to improve your well-being. Finally, it is also a philosophy, teaching us how to slow down, look inside and accept. Yoga is all and evokes all.

To me, yoga is a lifestyle choice. To be a true yogi, you don’t just do it in a studio and yoga is not a mat-focused activity. You incorporate yoga in the way you walk and hold your spine upright, the way you breathe and take full cleansing exhales, the way you focus your energies on a daily or weekly mantra, and how you pay special attention to your chakras and give different energy epicentres love when they need it. To me that is yoga. All day, every day. #yogalove

Yoga is…life. It was explained to me “that your first response to life was to breathe, so to take in and fill yourself up IS to take in life.” It’s more than a lifeSTYLE to me, it is accepting a new life and then taking root to develop in every which way.

  • Danielle

    PURE 🙂

  • To me yoga is a heartbeat, constantly expanding and contracting our lives, our bodies, our breath. It grows stronger, steadier, and more calm the more it is used.

  • Shari

In yoga, we use our practice as a time to do just that, practice using our breathe and the asanas to be in the moment with ourselves, to get to practice knowing and loving our true selves, from which we can be compassionate to others. This brain-body practice is supported by science, and also an art and philosophy for how to live our lives.

    namaste. peace.

Yoga is like an inkblot. When asked what it is, the first person says, “It’s a horse.” The second person says, “No, you’re wrong. It’s a dog.” Then a third person says, “You’re all wrong, it’s a cat.” And so it went on without consensus. Finally the first person says, “You know, know that I look at it I think it’s a…..” And so it went on.

Yoga is like a river that slowly over time re-sculpts the landscape one grain of sand at a time, until one day, there is a Grand Canyon where once there was flat land.

Yoga is like taking a bus that has many stops. At the first stop a person gets off because he/she doesn’t want to go to the end of the bus stop. At the second stop, another person gets off. And so it goes until the last person gets off. Each person got off the bus based on their needs. Each person took the same bus but wound up at a different destination.
    YOGA IS.

No matter how much you’ve resisted your inner voice over the years and let your ego voice guide you, yoga takes all of that and throws it in your face, proving that your true essence is not just hanging out at your convenience, but rather waiting on the outskirts, begging to be beckoned. Yoga tells you who is running the show- not your voice, your opinion or judgement, but rather your shortest links, your weakest voices, your harshest judgements etc. Yoga unveils the real you- good bad ugly and inflexible. Yoga is a slap back to true essence.

Art and Science often blur together. Yoga is both. Yes there is a boat load of philosophy that gets thrown into the mix but ultimately who’s philosophy to buy into or not buying into any of the philosophy is up to the individual . You cannot remove the biology and kinesthesiology from yoga. The art of yoga is in the eye or mind of the practitioner should they choose to view it.

Since the breath is yoga and we must breathe to live, I believe yoga is a way of being in the world, of seeing and observing without judgment our lives, of starting where one is at any given moment and acting from a strong center so that we are acting not reacting. Yoga is a means by which one can be open and strong in our dealings with ourselves and with others.
