Thou Art to Combineth Shakespeare and Yoga in LA

in YD News

In a stroke of genius (or a productive acid trip) that may keep the high schooler in all of us awake through an amateur Shakespeare performance, LA’s Archway Studio/Theater is bringing Hindu and yogic elements into their annual A Midsummer Night’s Dream performance. The unique yoga studio by day, theatre by night venue lends itself perfectly to this unusual performance pairing.

Each character has been assigned a Hindu deity to represent and a distinguishing yoga pose by Annie Freeman, studio manager, principle yoga teacher and yogic choreographer. Director Steven Sabel on the concept, “It’s a perfect blending of yoga and theatre art through Shakespeare’s most popular work in a way that lends itself to the text, and also creates a beautifully vivid performance.”

Admittedly, most of my knowledge of Bill Shakespeare’s AMND comes from the 2001 classic Get Over It, starring Kirsten Dunst, Tom Hank’s son and Sisqo, so here’s hoping this show makes it’s way to NYC.

Opening tonight! Alas, we are on the east coast, so if thou catches it let us yanks know. Archway Studio/Theatre presents their original adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays, July 12 through August 18, 2012.

  • As a lover of both freaky Shakespeare adaptations (popular artist that he was, I think he’d be thrilled to see his work made accessible and interesting to new generations) and weird new twists on yoga (innovators that they were, I think the old yogis…you get the picture), I’d be all over this if LA weren’t so far away…
