When Yoga is Mistaken for Public Hanging

in Public Display of Yoga, YD News

Your YogaDork Neighborhood Report:

Yikes. What to say about this one. Apparently a homeless man was getting his yoga stretch on near a playground in Palatine, IL, according to the local Patch report. Unfortunately it looked like he’d hung a noose around his neck in an attempted public suicide, and the authorities were called.

“Officers found the man standing alongside a fence using a black rope that was attached to the fence to stretch his arms,” Deputy Palatine Police Chief Brad Grossman said. “He said he was not trying to hurt himself.”

Though he explained he wasn’t trying to hurt himself, the man was voluntarily taken to the hospital to be checked just in case. While there is noose pose (pasasana) and rope walls (see Iyengar), we don’t recommend taking your rope hanging tricks outside, near playgrounds. However, for this man needing a stretch (and a place to do it), we give him props for getting yoga in where he can. We’ve seen how positive the practice can be.

Er…you might want to keep this in mind when striking your poses for Halloween Yoga photos. No noose-like objects near childrens’ playgrounds. Check. You might want to steer clear of Kate Moss golden crotchasana as well. Just sayin’.
