Now this is the kind of yoga news that makes all the beefers look like chopped liver. Meet Larry Sherman. Just a few years ago he weighed half a ton! 540 pounds to be exact. It took him 3 1/2 years to drop 365 pounds and credits a huge portion of it to his yoga practice:
“She came over and put her hand on my back, you know, and on my heart,” said Sherman.
He said hardly anyone outside of his family had touched him in 17 years.
“To know that someone cared to have that compassion — that they didn’t see my fat or my weight. They saw me as a person. That was just so powerful for me. It was life-changing,” said Sherman.
Aw. It’s a touching story and we’re super proud of The Sher-man for committing to the practice and totally (probably) dorking out. Also, it doesn’t hurt that his gurus happen to be the telegenic tag team of Erik and Lisa Paskel, co-founders of The Yoga Shelter, and formerly known as “Team Yoga” from last fall’s ‘Amazing Race’. They lost! But don’t feel too bad for those guys, this heartwarming story of overcoming obstacles is a great lead-in to their soon-to-come reality show “Intervention meets Work Out meets The Osbournes” that we just can’t wait to watch! (not really). In any case, we applaud the efforts of any teachers who can move people in such a way, as in Larry’s case, to lift them to a higher ground, and who can inspire Larry’s to spout these final words of advice: “Don’t give up on yourself.” Right on fella.

Very impressive, even if he only weighed a quarter-ton a few years back. 🙂
I love it when we connect with one another. Good for him and for everyone who gets to their mat and challenges themselves to be their best.
love this! when people hear I’m a teacher, so many say “oh, I can’t do yoga because [fill in the blank]. I tell them, if you can breath, you can do yoga.
So wonderful! Brings a tear to the eye. And is that a Ganesha t-shirt Sherman is wearing? Yay for yoga! 🙂
It’s a wonderful healing story, touches my heart.
I’m going to go right out and touch every fat person I see.
