He is the handsome prince of health advice, Oprah’s darling and the master of his own very successful business with books, internets and TV shows galore! Oh and he’s also a surgeon. It’s Dr. Oz! Successful indeed, Dr. Mehmet Oz is largely responsible for making Americans aware of their diets, consumption and self-care on a healthy and sometimes alternative level, ie acupuncture (his wife also practices Reiki). So are you surprised this fit and fiddled Dr. superstar is into the yog? Yeah, every day! In fact, this dude’s a fitness machine (it’s almost scary).
Via this past Sunday’s NYTimes Magazine:
And he begins every day with a seven-minute mat workout that intersperses a succession of rapidly changing yoga poses with five sets of 10 push-ups, then tacks on 20 situps of a particularly grueling nature at the end. That is his base line, to which he adds more yoga, short runs and basketball games with friends near his home in Cliffside Park, N.J., when he can.
At-home practice mind you.
On top of his own daily routine, he and his family have their own sort of impromptu fitness ‘olympics’ on the weekends. This besides all of his TV show stuff and the fact that he’s said to perform up to 250 heart operations every year. Oof! This all sounds very exhausting. Man we are total slackers. According to the article, Ozzie is so freaking active he has to be reminded to go to sleep. Seriously though, where’s his iphone app?
Just from us at YD to honorary yogadork Dr. Oz: we do hope you can fit in a little legs up the wall (viparita karani) and a long and lengthy savasana. It’s important to play dead you know!
Here’s the handsome fellow showing the Big ‘O’ his Big Tree…er..

There is a recurring hazard of yoga being marketed and losing its truth. Look at the “yoga-celebs” who sell mattresses, DVD, matts, clothes, sex toys, etc. Mark of the best. Sincerity is essential, or it becomes mere good exercise. There are VERY few — and closely held — long-term sucesses that keep there mouths shut, thank God; “attraction not promotion”. MARKETING is finding what the public wants and giving them more of it. More than they need, that is. I defer all opinion on the personalities involved.

awww thanks for shoutout and this, yd.
dr. oz also apparently teaches patients yoga (probably not himself) as part of therapy. this i gleaned from dr. oz’s endorsement of “yoga as medicine” written by another excellent yogi/doctor timothy mccall, yoga journal’s medical editor.
all that aside—doctor oz’s tree sure is stunning.
um… i hope he’s focusing on his breathing and not his abs during that “7 minute” mat workout
is this the place to join the dr. oz fan club? i think i might have a little tv crush.
i think he falls into a different category of celebrity – yogi in that first and foremost, he’s a doctor. people look to him for health advice, not necessarily because he’s on tv.
i hope he does for yoga what oprah has done for reading.
That is a very good tip especially to those fresh to the blogosphere.
Brief but very precise information… Many thanks for sharing this one.
A must read article!
