Not to be confused with World Yoga Day (Jan 31), Yoga Day USA is the happy baby of mama org, Yoga Alliance, and was created “to raise awareness and change lives through the proven mental and physical benefits of Yoga.” And it’s just around the corner! This Saturday January 23 to be exact. Hadn’t heard about it yet? We said it before and we’ll say it again; there’s really not much promotion and fanfare leading up to the big day. Alas, we are here once more (the 11th anniversary, no less). It’s Yoga Day USA so let’s celebrate, right?
While listings of events for the day are kinda sketchy and scarce, NYers will be pleased about the return of YoGA at MoMA!
Co-hosted by Flavorpill and The Junior Associates of The Museum of Modern Art, YoGA at MoMA will combine the flow of asana with the magnificence of Gabriel Orozco’s Mobile Matrix, a suspended whale skeleton excavated from a beach in Baja, California (see video of installation below). The class is Saturday, January 23, at 8:30 a.m. and will be led by Virayoga’s Elena Brower. Send your RSVP to yogamoma@flavorpill.com by Thursday Jan 21!
Note: Sadly there are only 100 spots, and rsvp’ing will only get your number in the lottery. So you may or may not be lucky enough to shake the sleep off early Saturday morn yogaing under a massive whale carcass. Heavy.
For other events around town and across the USofA please check your local studios, YMCA’s and community centers! Surely they will be taking this opportunity to share yoga and market themselves (hey, it’s true). We’ll add links as we find em. (yogadayusa.org)
