Happy Saturday and last official weekend of the calendar summer. Yep, Sept 22 marks the first day of Autumn, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get in one last shot of summer-style festivities! Tomorrow, Sunday September 20 brings 2009’s Global Mala Yoga for Peace event. The wha? Founded by Shiva Rea, Global Mala is an event to unite the global yoga community in forming a ‘mala around the earth’ by practicing the sacred cycle of 108 through any of the following approaches:
- 108 Sun Salutations (or variations of 27, 56)
- 108 rounds of mantra such as the Gayatri or Maha Mrityanjaya
- 108 rounds of a kriya
- 108 minutes of meditation, kirtan or movement meditation
and coinciding with the UN International Peace Day, the fall equinox, and as luck would have it, Yoga Month.

Not in NYC? There’s a big ‘ol fest happening all day in LA. Go here for more details. And Beantowners can go to GlobalMalaBoston.org for local festivities.
You can also check the Global Mala site or better yet yogamonth.org for events near you, though you might have better luck just asking around town because neither seem to have all the updated info.
UPDATE: Thanks to YogaforCynics in the comments for Philly details: “Global Mala’s happening at Ryah Yoga in Conshohocken, benefiting Yoga Unites: http://www.ryahyoga.com/media/GlobalMala.pdf

Earlier…September is Yoga Month, Did You Know? It’s About Awareness
For those in the Philly area, the Global Mala’s happening at Ryah Yoga in Conshohocken, benefiting Yoga Unites: http://www.ryahyoga.com/media/GlobalMala.pdf
funny about the 108 of everything. I study with Srivatsa Ramaswami who studied with Krishnamacharya for 30+ years. Yesterday he was talking about sun salutations and he talked about this thing about doing 108 sun sals. he said “show me where it says you must do 108. can someone tell me where that came from? I think 108 of anything is too much.”
words from my guru!
believe the theme is just stemming from 108 beads on the mala, 108 names of hindu deities etc..
more significance of 108 on wikipedia.
my favorite being… “108 is the natural number following 107 and preceding 109.” 🙂
And I’m so jaded that all I can think of is that this is a brilliant way to promote her brand. $108 for a two day pass? Where is that money going? Is this just another way to make some more dough off of yoga. Inquiring yogis want to know. Sounds like a YogaDork investigation is needed here…:)
thanks so much for the mention! boomerang yoga had a great event & boy, did those sun salutes (each of the 9 teacher added their own piece flair – aka additional, challenging poses) really kicked my asana…. but all worth it!
we raised some great funds & there was delicious food awaiting us from shanti shack , including these AHmazing vegetarian brownies & sandwich bites!
we are still collecting donations through october 31st if anyone is still interested in donating to bent on learning!
thanks to all those who already contributed & a special thanks to yogadork for posting this!
