UPDATE: Yoga in School OK If Not Called Yoga

in YD News

They changed the name! Genius! This story gets even more absurd as the same parents who complained about yoga being taught in the classroom for fear of their children being confused with Hinduism, have approved the exact same exercises under a new school-spirited name, “Raider Relaxation.”

“It is still yoga. If opponents feel a name change solves the dilemma, I’m all for that,” Board of Education President Julie Reagan said Wednesday. “We are basically doing the same thing, we’re just calling it something different.”

After realizing they were just breathing exercises everyone cooled their jets. Whatevs. Later today we’ll be taking some time out for our daily afternoon consumption of nourishment accompanied by hot liquid made from herbs and spices. Otherwise known as lunch and our favorite Yogi tea. (Redbush Chai is delicious). What’s in a name anyway?

  • Oh, the power of words. And misconceptions…
Yoga Ed. had the same issue in Colorado I think, but that was like 6 years ago. I look forward to the day when the terms ‘yoga’ and ‘meditation’ are celebrated words in the educational system. Programs like Yoga in My School (www.yogainmyschool.com), Yoga 4 Classrooms (www.yoga4classrooms.com), Yoga Ed. (www.yogaed.com), The Hawn Foundation (www.thehawnfoundation.org), and Mindful Schools (www.mindfulschools.org) are paving the way…
Let’s keep up the good work!
